Insider Tips

Make sure to buy your tickets online to avoid lines on-site. There is also free camping on BLM land next to town—check here for more info. Taos Pueblo, a continuously inhabited community for 1,000 years, makes a great side-trip from the festival. Lastly, make sure to drink plenty of water—Taos is sunny, hot and dry.

The Scoop

The Taos Solar Music Festival is a virtually undiscovered mountain town festival held in Taos, a high desert mesa town in northern New Mexico. The family-friendly festival, now in its 14th year, is held at Kit Carson Memorial Park in Taos (elevation 6,952 feet) with massive mountain peaks providing a gorgeous backdrop.

The Solar fest is “a party with a purpose” and is intended to help raise awareness of renewable energy, using music to communicate. The main stage is wind-powered, while the small Solar Stage is, yes, solar-powered. Meanwhile, festival microbrew-sponsor Sierra Nevada Brewing Company will drive to the festival in a solar-powered truck stocked with liquid gold for the festival’s Beer Cantina.

Aside from the beer, the music will be stellar. Saturday’s line-up includes Lyle Lovett, Los Lobos and the Del McCoury Band and Latin-rock artist Cucu Diamentes and her 10-piece band. Sunday, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Sonny Landreth and Mat Kearney take the stage.

The festival is held in the center of town—making it easy to explore the Taos art colony, mingle with locals and immerse yourself in a culture sculpted over millennia. Taos has dozens of renowned galleries, studios and shops throughout town and surrounding villages. The deep arts culture fuses with an American Indian heritage and Spanish influence to create a vibrant multicultural groove.

The towering Taos Mountains to the east also provide ample opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing and river rafting—the Taos Solar Music Festival has all the elements of a cosmic summer excursion.
