Not masses of pistses

We went to the Czech Republic because it was cheaper than the Alps basically. Bit we were really pleased with Spindleruv. Sure -not masses of pistes, but what there was was fun to play on and we filled 5 days in on the reds and blues etc either side of the valley. Eating, drinking and accommodation are brilliantly cheap. So if you are after kilometers of fresh new runs every day this place is maybe not for you- but if you after a good, fun, cheap few days then look no further. There are 3 main lift accesses spread about a mile or so along the valley - 2 of which are joined up on the hillside. The Ski bus is every hour or so which is fine if you organise yourselves, and we could walk to a beginners tow from our pension to get to the Medvedin pistes which was handy (and ski back). We had great weather but it was end of season for us so the pistes got a bit icy in the mornings for a couple of days before ski traffic loosened things up. They'd obviously had a lot of snow earlier and there's a lot of forest tracks and trails (lots of ski cross country going on) so I would imagine the back country is good mid season. We flew to Wroclaw and got a taxi transfer which between 6 of us was very economical. Oh, and I would definitely avoid weekends if you can as half of Prague seemed to be there and it was v.busy.

Skiers look to pistes in The East

Skiing in Eastern Europe, particularly Romania and Bulgaria, is good value for beginners and families on a tight budget.
