2016/2017 Atomic Backland FR 117 ski review. OnTheSnow tested this ski as part of its men’s Powder Category.
A new model in Atomic’s freeride powder series, the Backland FR 117 is inspired by the former Automatic 117, but features new HRZN Tech—Atomic’s new horizontal rocker technology that adds surface area in the tip and tail for better float and a reduction of tip deflection in chopped-up snow. Testers awarded the 117-mm-waisted ski the high flotation scores, but were less impressed with versatility. “For a big powder ski, this one came around quickly and held a turn,” says Loomans. “It swings and pivots easily, but most of all it’s a super fun, floaty ski.” Construction details include a poplar wood core with a lightweight, backbone-shaped carbon insert that runs the length of the ski. “Take this Backland into the backcountry and enjoy how well-balanced it is in the soft snow,” says Jakob.
