Salomon MTN Explore ski boot review, 2017/2018 men's Backcountry Category, from our equipment experts at powered by Masterfit.

Testers dug how well the Salomon MTN Explore gripped the foot and lower leg and created a secure connection to the sliding tool. At a 100 flex, our taller, heavier testers overpowered it a bit. But for average and smaller skiers in soft snow, there was nary a complaint, with those guys calling Salomon's MTN Explore agile and able to rip in all conditions. "Good turn initiation and good aft support," remarked Orlich. "Responsive with terrific ground feel."

Testers said average feet might need some help from the bootfitter, especially at the forefoot, as this is a true narrow fit that the low volume set will appreciate. According to the test team, the ski boot's flex feel is soft while the tongue cushioning is a bit on the firm side, and they thought the stance angles were dialed for getting around on skis. MTN Explore is light, rockered, tech-compatible and has a slick sideways release mechanism Salomon calls Surelock, which testers liked. Range of motion is better rearward than forward, but the test crew gave the boot's quality of movement a thumbs up for being smooth and unhindered.
