Full review

2 days ago after an overnight through morning 4-6" dump of Lake Superior medium light the ski area was a delight. Today, during 12-14" of medium heavy the ski area was a nightmare. The high water content snow was effectively alabaster stool and in desperate need of grooming as only the steepest faces (most not accessible owed to limited lift selection and heavy trail breaking slogs) permitted a series of a handful of linked turns. Approximatey 50% of the terrain was offline owed to failure to get the bi-directional double chair running and the triple chair's offline status for going on 6 years - irreprehensible!!! as it is the area's newest (1991), fastest and most comfortable lift accessing nearly 75% of the north east and north west facing terrain. Armed with a single power tiller, the operator managed to till about 20% of the operating lift accessible terrain. What was tilled featured a very soft pack, easily navigated but also easy to catch an edge. Anything ungroomed was a a "figure 11" in waiting, as the high density/resistence and depth snow would permit very little turning. Alas, only a dozen or so brave souls navigated the white knuckle trip from Hurley/Ironwood and/or were already in residence at Whitecap's rather outdated on slopes lodging. The staff working this day were mostly congenial but couldn't make up for the hopelessly inadaquate grooming and lift operation.
