Not a great day yesterday. Crowds were high and backcountry crusty. Normally when the lines get long, you can spend you time hiking up and getting some fresh descents. Unfortunately, the cold wind has been building a ice shell on the light stuff underneath. Makes from some rough off-piste turns. Fats help, but if you break thru you'll be stuck in a rutted turn that'll keep ya moving straight (no arcing in ruts). Did have a nice descent on Powder Bowl (north facing). Watch out for the rocks on the entrance. The upside is it's keeping everyone away from it. The bad is Forest Queen has a 15 minute line (adding to the 2 lift ups). Groomer are nice, but crowds really get in the way as everyone's hanging in the middle of the runs. This is pretty much what to expect for a holiday week with conditions as they are. On aside, Crystal Mt. conditions reports are borderline fradulant. They'll say/post anything to get you up there. I've had 3 trips this year with good reports posted only to be rained on, have the upper chairs closed, and be stuck in crowds. Seems like the marketing dept is running the mountain this year. It's too bad as previous years it was much better. Also, the REX chair is pretty flakey this year. After 19 years, I think it's finally giving up the ghost. It can be a big problem for your day as it controls more than half the desired terrain to spread the crowd out. Feeling a little down on Crystal right now. Take it with a grain of salt. Once the weather changes to fresh dumps or spring conditions, it'll be a new ballgame.
