Okemo has great snowmaking and lots of trails and is a fun place to ski. It's close enough to the Boston area for an easy day trip. To be honest, I've never been crazy about the first ride up from the original base area -- you ride up and ski down to one of several chairs, but you only have to do it once and you're on the mountain. And if you plan your day right, you don't have to go back to the base lodge until it's time to leave. Okemo continues to grow -- more trails, more base areas, more housing. Tim and Diane Mueller have created a wonderful, expansive ski area. And Ludlow itself is a funky little ski town, with lots of neat eateries.
