Need to go at the right time to get a 5 star experience if your focus is the skiing.
The Town, the size and the "glamor"
The lack of snow. Glorified cat tracks called ski runs.

Every one has a guilty pleasure and mine is Zermatt. Yes it is expensive and a 3.5 hour transfer from Zurich or Geneva BUT if love good food, amazing views, fantastic skiing and the opportunity to head to Italy for a day this is the place for you.
Amazing restaurants, views and skiing
It's pricey

The best Swiss destination resort, with restaurants, shopping and views galore. But as far as skiing is concerned, are so many better places to ski with fewer crowds and more varied terrain. Avoid the resort during the month of March as the lift lines are the worst I have ever experienced. If you use Emerald Chair at Whistler as your benchmark, this is a lot worse.
beautiful views
lack of challenging terrain

I have been coming to Zermatt for years, its expensive but the best, only the issue of being far away from international airports.
long runs, very friendly town, many lifts
3.5 to 4 hrs by train from int's airports

Reduce ski pass price if you are opening less than 50% of the mountain. Only then will people think they are not being ripped off.

My favourite ski resort and great also for non skiers and great hiking in summer: Positives: Zermatt is a beautiful town with a stunning backdrop of scenery. The ski areas are connected so you can ski in Italy, the glacier, Riffelalp and Sunnegga in one day. Typically found the pistes to be excellent condition, well groomed and quiet The nightlight is very good appealing to many age groups. Lots of places have free live music of different styles. Restaurants are amazing but you don't have to spend a lot and seek out better value places like the Brown Cow or Grampies. Grown up (rather than teenage) Apres Ski options - eg Cervo and Bar 55 Good shopping Easy to get to from Zurich / Geneva airports with a train. Just over 3 hours and one change. Chill and look out the window. Cons: Hotels are a bit pricey. Used Tasch last time which is a very easy ride to Zermatt and a nice town itself. It takes time to get skiing as you have to take a lift up. The links to Italy can be closed a lot due to wind.
A resort with everything
No skiing from the resort

5 Reasons NOT to go to Zermatt 1. TRANSFERS (ACROSS TRAIN TRACKS) - there are no bus transfers between Zurich/Geneva Airport and Zermatt. This leaves the train which takes 3+ hours and is not equipped for ski equipment. Oh and you may even have to be prepared to carry yourself and your luggage across the train tracks at St Nikholas 2. NON ACCESS ALL AREAS SKI PASS - Your ski pass will not work for you at Gornergrat Bhan. I paid 323 CHF for a 6 day ski pass being promised access to all uplifts. Arrive at Gornergrat terminal and asked to pay another 82 CHF, hmmm let me think about that??? 3. 5 STAR ACCOMMODATION?? - Can you please take your sheets off and take out your garbage before you leave. 4. FOOD POISONING - from a five star resort.....beware the seafood and lamb. 5. YOU REMEMBER COOL RUNNINGS? - well if you do you'll remember the frosty response the Swiss gave the Jamaicans.... Enough said!
