Today was the first time I have skied The Canyons and it will be the last. Despite all of the mega-resorts' roofs covered in deep snow, the conditions were like a bad day somewhere on the East Coast--some trails showing the ground underneath, snowmakers blowing in your face as you ski down, and ICE! Many of the locals have said that that this has been one of the snowiest years ever too. Conditions aside, the layout of the mountain is reminiscent of something in a M.C. Escher sketch--no matter where you go, you end up having to walk up a hill. This all begins from when you first arrive because you have to trek at least a quarter mile through all of the stores and other resort crap with all of your ski gear before you can even get on the snow. That is not all. If the gondola is not working (which it was not this morning) you have to hike another quarter mile up the snow to get over to a two-seater chair lift. This turned out to be typical throughout the mountain--to get from one part of the mountain to the other, you have to take these narrow trails that are more like unplowed highways where there are snowboarders flying by on either side of you only to then stand in your way on the flat parts. There are so many great places in this area that are better worth the time. I am sorry I wasted one day of my short trip here.
