The perfect neighbor to Snowbird, Alta provides some fantastic expert terrain and some decent intermediate options. There is some hiking involved with a bit of the expert terrain but the general feel of Alta is outstanding. When I last vistied snowboarders were not allowed, and as far as I know this is still the mountain's policy, so take that into account if traveling with someone who only boards.
The only complaint I have concerning Alta is the lift system. The updated quads are nice but logistically the mountain funnels you into certain areas where if you want to get somewhere else there is no avoiding a particular lift. The real probelm may be that there are only 7 lifts serving outside of the base area. But if you stick to non-holiday weeks to visit you probably won't find many lines.
Bottom line this is a great mountain and you would be crazy to pass up the Snowbird/Alta duo if in the Salt Lake area.
