3 Resorts, Gondolas, Lots of Mountain!!
3 Resorts, a bit expensive, can easily become separated
Spent only a couple of days in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis in spring-2010. It was a poor snow year in northern Austria by all acounts, and so the base had some limited access problems. Having said that, the mountains are high enough up, that once in the gondolas, you soon find plenty to sink your teeth into. 3 resorts, spread across the length of a valley has pros and cons - variety, a change in scenery, but also provide for some issues remaining in contact with group members, and also dilutes the atmosphere a little.
Plenty of varied terrain, with enough of the hard stuff, mixed in with easier cruisers, to suit most recreational types, and those seeking more of a thrill ride. A couple of decent terrain parks for the boarders. A solid family place for sure, and enough mountain not to become bored (or possibly even see it all). What it does provide in quantity other than area, is absolutely stunning views of the Alps, with Switzerland, Italy and Germany in sight. Phenominal!
There are good facilities at the 3 bases and high up the mountain in several locations. The resorts are connected by a series of gondolas, but you can ski down the mountain to any base. Gondolas take you up the mountains too, avoiding long wind swept rides at the colder times of year.
A varied nightlife in each town (each offering something a little different), something for everyone, and plenty of charming locally owned restaurants. Varied accomodation to meet all budgets and requirements. Resorts are on the hillside, so keep your hiking boots on. You might find things expensive, but what ski town isn't? But the size, quality and varied terrain outweight the negatives.
Thumbs up - it stays on our list of "must come here again" places to ski.
