Of the 3 major Italian ski regions Trentino is the most Italian compared to the Italo-French region of Valley of Aosta and the Italo-German region of South Tyrol. It's a mountain paradise divided into 223 towns which range from the 73m above sea level of Riva del Garda to the 1584 m of Peio.
The region isn't entiredly Italian, however, thanks to the Ladin community in the Fassa Valley and the “German island” in Fersina Valley, near Trento. In any case, skiing in Trentino speaks the universal language of numbers: 730 km of downhill runs of all technical levels served by 278 ski lifts and 3000 artificial snow cannons which cover 80% of the slopes. The change of grade of all the slopes put together is 67,000 m. In addition, there are 480 km of cross country skiing trails. All of this with a scenic Alpine backdrop featuring peaks like Adamello, Brenta,Sella and the high plateaus of Trentino. Le Corbusier defined the Dolomites, which are shared by Veneto and South Tyrol, “the most beautiful natural architecture in the world”.
Gondolas and chairlifts are totally computerized and are safe and efficient. Trentino boasts serveral cutting-edge technologies, for example the gondolas at Alpe di Tognola, the main ski area of San Martino di Castrozza, or in the Fassa Valley the two gondolas at Canazei at Lupo Bianco and towards the Sella Pass, rings in the long chain of the Sellaronda lifts. And again the 6 and 12 seat gondolas at Madonna di Campiglio (the one at Grostè, 6 km in length, is the longest in the world). In the Fassa Valley there are some of the largest gondolas in the Alps, for example at San Pellegrino Pass (110 places) in Col Margherita and at Campitello (120 places) in Col Rodella.
In the mountains of Trentino, in the winter and the summer, bustle with tourists, thanks to an impressive hospitality infrastructure: there are 437 thousand places to sleep (of which 90 thousand are in hotels and 170 thousand in second houses) compared to 450 thousand year round residents. It's a flexible and efficient structure founded on the warmth of family run businesses, which, however, doesn't lack in professionalism.
