Gatlinburg is a nice place to visit. Just keep a few things in mind: Parking at Obergatlinburg is VERY limited. Be prepared to park at the bottom of the hill and ride the tram to the top. During peak season, riding the tram usually requires a 2 hour wait in line. Next, the hill at Gatlinburg is small. It's not like most large resorts with many trails to choose. Ober counts 1 long trail as two trails, upper and lower. Lift lines usually aren't long but there are many people on the trails. Night skiing is fun and most of the trails are lighted but be prepared for icy conditions. That is just the nature of the climate almost year round. Best recommendation: rent a cabin and arrive at Obergatlinburg at 9AM and be prepared to stay all day. Once you decide to rest from skiing or ice skating, you can simply ride the tram down into town and check out the local flavor. Practically everything is within walking distance once you leave the tram station. It's a great place to take the family as long as you keep those few simple recommendations in mind. Overall rating based on environment and nightlife B- but overall skiing rating would have to be D+
