The mountainous canton of St. Gallen, with peaks reaching higher than 3000 metres, is located in northeast Switzerland. To the north lies Lake Constance and to the east the Rhine valley.

St. Gallen is home to the ski resorts of Amden, Appenzell, Degersheim,Flumserberg, Gommiswald, Hemberg-Bachli, Krummenau-Wolzenalp, Pizol-Heidiland, Toggenburg, and Wangs.

Toggenburg (1350m) is the largest resort in St. Gallen. It is a popular ski resort made up of three areas: Wildhaus, Unterwasser, and Alt St. Johann. The area features 55 kilometres of varied terrain suitable for all levels of ability connected by 19 lifts. There are also off-piste options, two terrain parks for snowboarders, and a seven-kilometre-long run.

The resort has been awarded the ‘Families Welcome' seal of approval and offers child care and a ski school for all ages. The three villages of Toggenburg have a fine selection of restaurants, cafes, and a vibrant nightlife with bars and discos. There is also accommodation for all budgets, with hotels, apartments, and guesthouses.

Toggenburg offers a wide choice of off-slope activities too, including 35 kilometres of walking trails, curling, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice-skating, swimming, tennis, bowling, and spas.

Amden (900m) has 25 kilometres of pistes connected by six mountain railways. Beginners can head to Arvenbuel while more advanced skiers take on the challenges of the Barenfall.

Flumserberg (1576m) offers everything from wide, gentle runs for families and beginners to mogul fiends and challenging off piste. The Obstacle Park is ideal for both rookies and pros.

Pizol-Heidiland (1500m) is a traditional village sharing its ski area with Wangs. The varied ski area - reached by gondola - is comprised of pretty ski slopes set above tree line. Skiers can reach a height of 2227 metres. A long black run winds its way through the forest back to the village.

Wangs (500m) is a picturesque village close rail and motorway links. The low altitude is irrelevant to ski conditions as a two-stage gondola takes skiers up to 1830 metres. Appenzell (800m) has a wide network of around 200 kilometres of cross-country ski trails.

Other resorts in St. Gallen include Degersheim (800-1000m), Gommiswald (800-1180m), Hemberg-Bachli (950-1120m), and Krummenau-Wolzenalp (740-1500m). The ski resorts of St. Gallen are around 100 kilometres from Zurich Airport.
