  • Saas Fee Hits Ten Feet of Powder

    Saas Fee's upper-slope snow depth has reached ten feet following another six inches of snow yesterday (March 19th). The resort's snow-depth to date has been above the seasonal average for several weeks now, one of the few resorts in Europe to be able to claim this after the prolonged warm start to the continent's winter.     Switzerland has arguably done the best of Europe's main ski nations through the warm December/January period this season, with the country's high slopes reporting up to five feet of snow when lower resorts were suffering with just a few inches.     Swiss ski area Zinal is currently operating at near full capacity with eight ski runs of the nine available open. Recent snowfalls have topped up machine made snow produced by a new 77 cannon system installed by York snowmakers last summer. Full Article

  • New Snow in Switzerland

    Switzerland continues to be marginally the best nation in Europe for snow cover with several of the highest areas including the Gstaad 3000 glacier, Saas Fee and Zermatt all reporting up to five feet of snow on higher slopes. The snow is continuing to fall but as with other areas of the Alps, conditions are stormy with strong winds leading to lift closures and in some cases (Notably Crans Montana) entire ski areas having to close.   • Swiss Snow Cover "Above Average"

    Swiss resorts seem to be faring the best from the current "Challenging" conditions in the Alps. Having the highest ski slopes in Europe is certainly a help with Zermatt, open 365 days a year thanks to its glacier, reporting snow depths 20-30% above average for this time of year, more than half the slopes open and runs right down to resort.     Despite a serious snowfall last weekend, many parts of the Alps are still suffering from the worst early seasons for coverage in more than a decade. Temperatures in to early December were the warmest ever recorded making snowmaking impossible and even putting glacier ski areas, usually a safe bet whatever the snow cover at lower elevations, out of action.
