We spent Chrismas 2007 skiing in Saalback. It was a fantastic ski holiday, and we stayed in a Neilson catered chalet. Accommodation was fairly basic, clean, warm, good food, friendly guests, informal and fun. The young chalet staff - Molly, Scott and Al were great. Some guests staying in hotels told us that it was more formal and that they were expected to dress for dinner. The sun shone every day and ski conditions were very good; however, on a few days it was extremely cold on the mountain. So worth stopping for a quick gluwine, snaps or hot chocolate (with rum). And it was always very cold at night. This area is know as the Ski Circus and Saalbach is linked to Hinterglemm and Leogang (nicked named lego land), and you can cruise on nice blues and reds all day. Sometimes there were a few bottlenecks to queue for the lifts, but things seemed to move quite quickly. Night skiing is only available in Hinterglemm from 7-10pm. There are plenty of mountain restaurants serving good food, at reasonable prices and with generous portions. We got addicted to Kaiserschmarren - Austrian pancake served with a sweet fruit sauce – just yummy and plenty to share. The dumpling soup and homemade sausages were also popular. Also, a beer, gluwine or snaps will set you up nicely for an afternoon skiing. The toilet facilities on the mountain were very good. There are at least four ski schools to choose from in Saalbach. Furstauer were fun but the group size was 12+ (this may not always be the case) Our Ski school instructors organised a night out - lots of fun and games and alcohol; and after tobogganing in the pitch dark down a mountain road; we hit the bars and the party continued. As you may have guessed by now, this is also a great apre-ski resort, and it starts as soon as you come off the slopes after a days skiing. Plenty of singing and dancing as you drink your gluwine or down a couple of beers before dinner. After lots of wine at dinner, there are plenty of bars to carry on drinking. We usually ended up at Bobby’s bar most evenings – some nights live music, but we gave the karoke night a miss. This is a really enjoyable resort, with fantastic skiing, party people and great fun. I would definitely return to Saalbach, and highly recommend it to you. Rosie, from London.
