I have skied much of Europe and can tell you that the Hochkonig and Maria Alm truely are on of the best kept secrets, Affordable skiing, with heart and a genuinely traditional feel. The ski region has seen huge investment and promises something for everyone from beginners to Freeride experts. I now visit every year, I would recommend Skifix.co.uk to help with accommodation they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable making a super holiday.

I have skied around the world and I can say that Maria Alm is one of my favorite places. The village is traditional and clean, food is good, prices are reasonable, no queues at the lifts, friendly people, good apres-ski, and great skiing. One of the best kept secret ski resorts in Europe. I recommend the Alpenhof hotel, which is a short walk to the small ski area and across the street from the bus stop to Aberg.
Very pleasant in the summer with great sights and streams. Also, excelent lift and slope in January
Lovely quiet resort close to several others , part of the vast Ski Amade network and very handy for the glacier at Kaprun ( half hour+ ) when lower slopes are short of snow.
For a family, I think this is the tops! Maria Alm offers several mountains which inter-connect. From my hotel, it was 3 minutes by foot to the village lifts which carried me up Natrun. I skied the backside down to the base of the larger Aberg, where I took the gondola and one of several express chairs higher up the mountain. I never had to wait more than about 5 minutes, and that was only at the most crowded chair leading to the summit of Aberg.I also skied Saalbach and Zell Am See that week, and the contrast was stark. Both the towns and the mountains were MUCH more crowded. Traffic was over-whelming both on and off those mountains. Maria Alm is off the beaten path, very quiet and charming, and offers the most un-crowded skiing I have experience in Europe.I think Maria Alm is still somewhat "the undiscovered country". Discover it now before everyone else does!
