  • Getting Fit In Utah

    The inaugural season for the Utah Winter Games WinterFit program was a huge success. The purpose of WinterFit is to get people off the couch and doing something active during the long winter months, when the average American gains four pounds. Nearly 280 people participated this winter, with 70 of them dropping over four pounds each in the Weight Loss category. Over 200 joined the Minutes of Activity competition, averaging over 57 hours of total physical activity per person for a total of over 12-thousand hours. Full Article

    Alta is signing up for wind power at the resort, promising to purchase 900,000 kilowatt-hours (kwh) for the next 12- month period. It will offset over 23 percent of Alta's energy consumption. Full Article

  • Storms Leave Snow In Utah and Colorado

    Powder is pounding Utah and Colorado. Snowbird has received around a foot and a half of snow with more expected this week. "A 16-inch storm like the one that came through Sunday is both important to help continue building a base and provides the fun powder conditions for which Little Cottonwood Canyon is known," said Snowbird President Bob Bonar.     Hit the Utah slopes for your skiing and riding pleasure! That's the message the Utah Office of Tourism is continuing to promote with its new "Life Elevated" logo. Truck trailers are featuring a snowy skiing scene on the side, and traveling around Utah and surrounding states to promote the state's snowy attractions. Full Article

    Utah could soon be getting new license plates to display the state's skiing industry. Craig Johnson with the Utah chapter of the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association came up with the idea. "It shows the larger, energetic skier along with the mountain background which is appealing and represents the state well." Full Article

    If you have ever seen a dog running around your local ski patrol hut, you can bet they are not there to just play. Many resorts have avalanche dogs, trained to jump into action in the unlikely event of an avalanche. In January, more than 30 teams of highly-trained avalanche rescue dogs and their handlers renewed their skills in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Full Article

    Alta offers some free time on the slopes every day, on the Sunnyside lift. It's called Ski Free After 3, which means you can take some turns off the Sunnyside lift from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. That's where you'll find the long, gentle slopes of Albion Basin, which is perfect for beginners and kids learning to ski.   • Snowbird's Tunnel of Love

    Snowbird skiers and riders are celebrating North America's first conveyor lift tunnel. It's nearly 600-feet and it connects Peruvian Gulch into Mineral Basin. You'll find it at Snowbird, at the top of the new Peruvian Express high-speed quad. The tunnel is 12 feet high, 10 feet wide and a four-minute ride. Full Article

  • Snowbird Starts the Season

    Big storms floating over Utah provided a happy opening day for Snowbird. The 35th season began with natural and machine-made snow in Gad Valley with the Gadzoom, Mid-Gad and Wilbere chairlifts serving 17 runs. Snow crews had the corduroy ready, and are busy grooming and making snow to open more runs as quickly as possible. Full Article
