Those who want to trek can follow the Via Alpina, a 1000 km of trails and refuges which connect Monviso to Val Formazza. The Piedmont Alps are also important from a cultural point of view and conserve important historical testimonies like the Fort of Fenestrelle. Perched between Chisone Valley and the Valley of Susa, it's known as Italy's “Great Wall of China” for the way it snakes up the mountain for 3 km.The principal ski areas in Piedmont are the Olympic mountains to the east, the valleys of the Cuneo province to the south, Valsesia and the Ossola valleys to the north, including Monte Rosa, and the Lanzo valleys and Canavese valleys to the north west, with the Gran Paradiso National Park.
