Snowmaking, grooming, facilities, staff
Can be crowded at peak times
Whitetail offers a very nice skiing experience for the mid-Atlantic. Snow making and grooming is excellent, and when temperatures cooperate, them mountain is fabulous. The variety of terrain is quite good, great beginner terrain and ski school, over 900 vertical feet, a high percentage of intermediate - upper intermediate groomers and a couple slopes that are quite steep for the region.
The high speed quad does an admirable job of keeping the crowds moving, but holiday weekends are a zoo, with much of DC and northern Virginia getting away to the mountain. Avoid those peak hours and you'll have a great facility with very friendly staff, all to yourself
Lodging is limited, no alcohol is currently served at the mountain, although they continue to work on that. Food is fairly good and overpriced, but they are accommodating to brown baggers and groups. Snow Time Inc. owns the facility, as well as RoundTop and Ski Liberty, two smaller mountains even closer to the urban throng, and have put loads of resources into the facility, while emphasizing friendly service.
The nearby village of Mercersburg offers some high end B&Bs as well as a couple good dining options, including Flannery's on the Square, my choice for high end pub food and a good craft beer.
