Just came back from a two-day early season trip to Elk. This is a great old school hill. No glitz or glamor, just good intermediate cruisers, a lack of crowds and very reasonable rates. We have been coming to Elk for the last few years after we found out about it on goski.com. It is exactly as advertised - skiing the way it used to be before the corporate investors turned every mountain into a cash extraction scheme.
The hill is very well laid out, with almost all the advanced trails being of the same length so there is plenty of variety, and lots of cruising. Conditions and grooming tend to be fairly good considering the location, and the multi-day passes are a great bargain. Combine that with reasonable and hearty lodge food and friendly employees and you have a really fun place to go - very family friendly. For those of us from the metro DC area, there really isn't a better less than one day drive location. Vermont or out West it is not, but very good for the area.
Now please don't visit - don't want any more crowds!
