Best downhill terrain in PA, Very family friendly, Great prices, No lines
Can be a trek if from the Philly area, Lifts, No major hotels in the
There were no lines to be found during my trip to Elk. The rentals provided by the mountain are well priced and the equiptment was above par for on-mountain rentals. Despite not having any lines, the lifts are old and slow. One (or both) of the doubles serving the night skiing area really should be converted into a quad.
The downhill terrain offered by Elk is the best I have managed to find thus far in Pennsylvania. The snowmaking looks like it leaves something to be desired. Despite early snows during this past season Elk was unable to keep much of its terrain open by the end of December. The prices on lift tickets and, especially on food in the lodge, are very reasonable.
Some of the negatives for Elk include it's distance from the Philly area, and it is generally harder to get to than most other eastern PA mountain resorts from northern New Jersey or NYC. Still, given the local alternatives to this area the extra drive is worth it.
