Elk mountain is easily my favorite ski area in PA and when I am there I (almost) think I am in Vermont. The views from the summit of the highest Mountain in northeast PA are far-ranging and pretty. The nearly 1,000' vertical make the runs seem quite long, and the eleven black diamond trails are quite interesting and fun to ski. My favorite runs are Slalom, Tuscarora, Iroquois, and Wyalusing, and Lackawanna; the winding, intermediate run, Kickapoo, is also a lot of fun. Elk makes abundant snow and grooms very well so the conditions generally are very good. I have to drive a good half hour more to reach Elk than to Jack Frost, Montage (Sno mountain) or Camelback, but the extra time is well worth it because these competitors cannot begin to compare to Elk for challenge and interest. My rating below for Elk is based on comparisons to other PA ski stations. Its terrain is exceptional for PA, but not in comparison to the major VT or NH ski areas.
