50 + Snowboarder with a season pass: Blue Mountain is a mix of good news bad news. It’s close so lots of people can get to it, good and bad news. The best time on the weekends is from 7:30 to about 10:00 in the mourning and after 3:30 in the afternoon. From 7:30 to about 9:30 you can just about ski onto the lift. People who work their say Monday is the best day to go, they re-groom the whole mountain Sunday night. The new in 07, six person high speed lift has eliminated the really long lines. Saturday afternoon I had to wait less than ten minutes. The bad new all those people are now on the hill. The big crowds on the weekend will chew through well groomed trails by 11:00am, but if the weather is above freezing the ice, (this is the Pocono’s), will soften up in the afternoon.
If it is your first time skiing or boarding don’t bother with the whole mountain lift ticket, the ski school hill will be enough. Unless your “friend” is a certified instructor take a lesson from the school, there is a reason for the helicopter pad at the bottom of the hill.
I try to board on the trails with the best conditions regardless of the rating. Blue grooms the trails during the day so keep your eye out for the fresh groomed trails. If you like terrain parks, I like the fact that they have a beginner, intermediate and advanced parks.
As far as this ski area having great conditions and that ski area sucks; I have found the big crowds can pretty much chew up any of the popular and easy to get to mountains in the Pocono’s. If the temperatures were in the teens the night before, they will all make snow and the conditions will be ok. A week of nights in the teens and the conditions will be a good as they get.
My favorite day, Super Bowl Sunday, the place is empty by noon. Ski or ride like crazy until 4:00 or so then head to your bowl party.
