On October 29th (that’s today!), 1792, Lt. William Broughton, a member of Captain George Vancouver’s discovery expedition that explored and charted the Pacific Northwest coast range, coined the name for Oregon’s tallest peak, Mt. Hood. He named it after a man he admired, the British Admiral, Samuel Hood. The mountain is a prominent landmark, visible up to a hundred miles away. Via The Clymb
