A modern ski centre with children's hill and extensive snow-making to guarantee a long season. Part of the Winterland Pass which includes Ål Gol, Geilo and Hemsedal (100km/63 miles away) giving over 100km of trails (not lift-linked areas). Geilo is nearer than Hemsedal and is bigger than Hallingskarvet but has shorter runs. Hallingskarvet is situated in a narrow shady valley with the road to Bergen via Aurland. The little town Myrdalen close to the skicentre has 67 inhabitants and a little shop. There are two hotels in the area: You can choose Hermon, which is a non- smoking and non-alcoholic very inexpensive place with regional food and a little chapel in the cellar next to the pool. The people are always smiling and looks very healthy and you feel like home - that is of course, if you don't smoke and drink at home. If you do, you better choose the Hallingskarvet Hotel, where the host as a sideline imports his own wines from Bulgaria, Italy and France. The wines are excellent and in the bar you will find everything that you need to remind you of après ski in the Alps. Of course there are a lot of different kinds of huts near to the hotels, where you can experience the Nordic style of après ski. The skicentre itself has three lifts: One for children and beginners, and one that lifts you just up over the spruce forest. If the weather is fine you can take the last lift for another few kilometres and then you got four different possibilities to ski the 3 kilometres down to the centre. The vertical drop is just on the right side of 500 metres, so it is possible both to gain some speed and to make some beautiful curves in the snow. The centre itself names two of the slopes black and two red, but the difference is not that big. The terms should be red light and red. Most of the skiers are Norwegians with their impressive Telemark skiing and if you would like to try yourself, it is a very good place to learn. For experts the best option is off piste after fresh snow.
