My wife and I have a vacation cabin right near Whiteface, and though we enjoy Whiteface when the conditions are good, we actually drive the extra 2 1/2 hours past our place to go to Jay very often. Jay is, as others have said, a skier's mountain. Services are pretty basic, but it's all about the skiing at Jay. The chutes from the peak are, I believe, the closest thing you'll get to western skiing here in the East: steep, alpine dwarf pines surrounding you, intimidating. The glades are just spectacular and abundant. Hotel Jay, which is unfortunately being replaced is right at the base and offers good deals. The hotel is comfortable and quite servicable. The food is actually quite good. The cafeteria is not terribly overpriced as mountains go. Very little to complain about with Jay..... And, of course Jay gets lots and lots of snow!
