Val Thorens is a fantastic ski resort. Some think the village is ugly but I'd strongly disagree. It's not quaint but it's definitely easy on the eyes. It has all the ammenities you'd need including a wicked swim/sauna area at the local leisure centre. Bars and clubs are in abundence and all within easy wlking distance (though there are a few steep hilly bits). It's not overly expensive and there is loads of slope side accommodation. Even the hotels and chalets that aren't on the edge of the piste have close access to the ski run that meander through the village.
Loads of lifts and queues aren't horrendous throughout the day, though they tend to get rammed at the close of play. They put on an awesome show for New Years so if you can make it for then, do it! getting over to Meribel is easy if you're intermediate but it can be a bit tough for beginners. It's well worth it though!
We've been pretty unlucky with the weather as the whiteout conditions have made it less enjoyable but in the sunshine this is the perfect place to ski.
