Is this place worth a 3.5-hr drive from Atlanta? Why are only 12/17 runs and 2/5 lifts open at the peak of winter?

Sorry you had a bad time Trevor. SnowShoe in West Virginia is the closest resort that has enough space for dedicated upper level features you are looking for. They are owned by Intrawest that runs some of the major resorts in the Rockies. Last I checked they did not have a superpipe.

the "south" has the only ski resorts that lie about their conditions. Sugar does NOT have that much base and is mostly ice

Yesterday was the best powder day I have ever had at sugar. Wind was bad and lines got long after lunch but before lunch was the best day I have ever had there.

Awesome snow today. One of the best powder days I've had at sugar. Lift lines got long at the bottom though.
