Free Ski School for Kids, ages 6-17 yrs, is offered every Saturday morning from January through March.
Registration is limited to the first 500 participants. The free ski school deal at Lookout Pass on the Montana/Idaho border is a one of a kind, not to be missed opportunity for anyone with kids in their family. All you need to do is register your child and grab some gear.
You don't even need a lift ticket unless you're hooked after the first hour. Lessons start at 10 a.m. and run one hour for beginners and one and a half hours for intermediate and advanced sessions. Kids from 6 to 17 years old may participate and are placed in classes according to their skill level. Lift tickets are not required during the lesson sessions but are required should the child wish to ski or snowboard during the balance of the day.
The resort will not only celebrate its 70th year next season but it will proudly boast the feat of putting more than 40,000 kids on skis and boards. The free lesson tradition first started in 1940 and the Saturday school is run by a group of volunteers devoted to teaching kids both the skills and etiquette they will need for a successful lifelong skiing experience.
Buses will run from Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene, Hayden, Silver Valley and Western Montana locations to bring participants to their lessons, as in previous years. The Liberty Lake, Post Falls, Hayden and Coeur d'Alene buses cost $12 per round trip/Saturday. The Silver Valley and Western Montana buses are free, as can be seen from the Free Ski School bus schedule. (Children are picked up and returned to numerous locations.)
The Free Ski School is funded by donations and made possible by Lookout Associates, Callahan-Zeller Foundation, Kingsbury Foundation, and the United Crusade of Shoshone County. For more information call Ric Clarke, Ski School Director, at 208-744-1301 x 15.
The program runs every Saturday through March and culminates with a BBQ and Awards Day. It fills up fast so make sure you're ready to register when the announcement comes next season.
