If you’re exploring beyond resort boundaries, it’s essential to have the education that goes along with off-piste terrain. In conjunction with Vail-based mountaineering company Apex Mountain School, Vail Mountain will host three avalanche safety clinics for aspiring and current backcountry users.

The hands-on curriculum developed by the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) is a Level 1 course that teaches students how to manage risk, make decisions and select backcountry routes in avalanche terrain based on field observations.

Courses are comprised of one classroom day and two field days on Vail Mountain and in surrounding terrain outside of the ski area boundary. Courses will be taught Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, Feb. 7 – 9, Feb. 14 – 16. An additional AIARE Level 1 course is available for Eagle County high school students, Feb. 28 – Mar. 2, to give local youth the tools to make better decisions as they explore beyond the resorts.
