Winner of this year’s OnTheSnow Visitors' Choice Award for Best Overall Resort in the Mid-Atlantic is this ‘hidden gem’ in the Endless Mountains 30 miles north of Scranton, Pa. Elk Mountain was one of the first resorts to open in Pennsylvania way back in 1959. Seven lifts (five doubles, one quad, and one cable tow in the terrain park) give access to 27 slopes and some of the most-challenging skiing in the region. The mountain receives an average of five feet of natural snow per season, but snowmaking covers 100-percent (180 acres) of the terrain. Elk's snowmaking system was overhauled in 2011, adding to the appeal of this spruce-covered resort.

APRÉS SPOTS: The base complex features a day lodge, restaurant, snack bar, ski school and ski and snowboard shop.

WHERE TO SKI: There are 180 skiable acres at Elk Mountain with 27 runs (six beginner, 10 intermediate, 11 advanced) serviced by six lifts including one quad and five double charlifts. Elk's vertical is around 1,000 feet.
