Gold Mine Lodge, Steamboat, Colo.

Technically, Steamboat’s high-speed Thunderhead Express quad doesn’t belong to this luxury home—but it sure feels like it. The luxury, six-bedroom on-mountain home sleeps 16 and is situated mere steps away from the Thunderhead chairlift.

At the primary thoroughfare, crowds line up at the Silver Bullet gondola (the main transport onto the slopes). But at Thunderhead—which unloads at the same place the gondola does—the only traffic includes residents living along Burgess Creek, skiers and riders who descended from other parts of the resort, and locals who cajoled a pal into dropping them off at the lift (Thunderhead Express is a secret backdoor on powder days).

Gold Mine Lodge places guests at the head of that diminutive pack. From the 7,721 square foot home, skiers and riders' total commute is about 150 yards—and zero wait. Need to get to the base area for lessons or child care? The ski home also offers up easy access to Right-O-Way run, a gentle, low-angle trail that leads to Gondola Square. Alternatively, an on-call shuttle service also picks up from the door providing easy access to the lower mountain and downtown. And at the end of the day, chalet guests glide right up to their private hot tub.

“But in the evening, after resort operations shut down, everything’s still and quiet. You can look up from your hot tub at a silent ski mountain,” said Robin Craigen, President of Moving Mountain Chalets (which manages the property). The slope access is as convenient as it gets—but Gold Mine Lodge sits apart from base-area hubbub. “Families really like that privacy,” Craigen said.

They like the home’s comforts as well. Six-and-a-half bathrooms give occupants plenty of sink and shower space, media room on the lower level complete with a rustic bar are fit for entertaining, and luxury finishes, such as timbers from an Oregon gold mine, a stone fireplace and views from every room, create an upscale ambiance. Want to sweat away your ski-day fatigue? There’s even a private sauna along with a fully equipped exercise room if the slopes weren't enough.
