Snow Trails, Ohio's oldest ski area, claims to be home to the highest slopes in the Buckeye State. The ski area, located south of Mansfield off I-71 on Possum Run Road - you have to love that name - offers a vertical drop of 300 feet, decent for this area of the Midwest, and has 15 trails serviced by four triple, two double chairlifts, and conveyor carpet lifts for the beginner and tubing areas.
The area first opened in 1961 and has been serving Buckeye snowsports enthusiasts for the last 48 years, which makes it one of the Heartland's older ski areas. It was the first ski area located below the 41st parallel to operate snowmaking.
They've been busy this summer clearing brush and saplings to prep a new glade area that opens this season. It's located to the right of the Mt. Mansfield double chair as you ride up the hill and is rated as expert terrain.
Snow Trails will kick off the winter season Saturday, Dec. 12, weather permitting. Local favorite party band Red Bull Jets will be live in the Snowflake Loft that evening starting at 9 p.m. Live bands will be playing until 1:30 a.m. Dust off the skis, boards, think snow and get ready to party Ohio.
If it's cold enough there will be snow. The area can cover up to six acres with a two-inch base in 24-hours with full fledge snowmaking.
