Every skier and snowboarder remembers his or her first time on snow, some with pleasure, others with a wince. That first outing can set the tone for a lifetime of fun, or be the reason why some never return to the slopes.
Ski instructors at Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania wants people to start on the right foot, or ski, or board. The mountain offers an affordable and flexible way to get newcomers started, and has programs for experienced riders and skiers as well.
Lessons for new skiers or snowboarders are offered every hour on the hour, every day, except for a few blackout dates around big winter holidays. A lesson package costs $50 weekdays and $55 on weekends. It includes the lesson, ski or snowboard rentals, and unlimited use of three practice hills. Packages are offered from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on non-holiday weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Exceptions are Dec. 26 to Jan. 1; Jan. 18 for the Martin Luther King holiday; and Feb. 15 during Presidents Week.
Learning programs for experienced skiers and snowboarders include workshops for women, seniors, and freeride enthusiasts. Lift tickets are not included in the pricing. The women's workshops (ages 21 and older) are designed and taught by women. They run for six consecutive weeks starting Jan. 6 and 7, 2010. Cost is $155 if purchased by Nov. 14 when the price rises to $165. A free babysitting services is provided.
The cost for senior workshops is the same. They start Jan.16 and run for six consecutuve Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Call for minimum age requirements.
Freeride ski and snowboard programs for those eight years old and up are available weekends starting Dec. 20 and ending Feb. 22. Deadline for the discout rate of $490 is Nov. 16. The fee rises $15 after that date.
