Skiers can get the European-like blend of ski slopes, elegant dining, fine wine, and historic lodging in the Canadian Rockies. Tucked on the valley floor along the Bow River, the Post Hotel caters to skiers and snowboarders with upscale amenities and lodging packages — all within Banff National Park.
The original Post Hotel opened as the Lake Louise Ski Lodge in 1942. It served as the base for ski operations in the early years of Lake Louise. The hotel’s name changed in 1957, its new moniker reminiscent of Post Hotels in the Alps. Restoration in the 1990s took the hotel up to modern standards.
Today, the Post Hotel takes on a European feel with its fine dining, cigar lounge, wine cellar, and fireplace library. Its updated accommodations feature hotel rooms, luxury suites, and cabins. The hotel’s Temple Mountain Spa, fitness room, indoor swimming pool, steam room, and hot tub cater to skiers, along with a complimentary shuttle that runs to Lake Louise Ski Area.
Among all the hotel’s amenities, the most accolades go to its Lake Louise Dining Room and wine cellar. The restaurant’s Canadian pine walls and fieldstone fireplace set the ambience for casually elegant dining. Executive Chef Hans Sauter mixes his Swiss heritage with fresh ingredients to conjure up tasty appetizers, artful sumptuous entrees, and decadent desserts. The advice of the sommelier is imperative as the renowned 26,000-bottle wine cellar contains choices from more than 2,200 different fine wines.
For skiers and snowboarders, two midweek packages are available at the Post Hotel this winter and spring. Lake Louise stays open for skiing into May, leaving several months still to book the packages.
One package combines two nights of lodging with two days of lift tickets and two breakfasts. Rates run $414-453 per person based on double occupancy in a standard room with two beds or a deluxe room with one king bed. Arrival must be Sunday through Wednesday.
A longer package bundles up three nights of accommodations with three days of skiing and three breakfasts. The cost for this package runs $621-679 per person for the same room types, but arrival must be on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday.
