Frankenstorm 2012: What to Expect for Mid-Atlantic Skiing and Snowboarding

Everyone on the East Coast remembers the crazy weather patterns that occurred last Fall. In early September, Hurricane Irene ravaged the Northeast, causing $19 billion in damage and a Halloween snow storm caused widespread damage across southern New England. Irene destroyed Killington's K-1 base lodge and flooding damaged access roads to resorts like Sugarloaf, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. 

This year, an early winter storm coming from the western United States, combined with a blast of arctic air from the North are on track to collide with Hurricane Sandy, who's making her way up the East Coast; meaning this year, the Mid-Atlantic could be in for the damage. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has dubbed the collision, "Frankenstorm," and the East Coast is bracing itself for disaster.

What does that mean for Mid-Atlantic ski areas? The worst of the storm is scheduled to hit early Tuesday, while New York City and New Jersey are projected to get the full brunt of the initial landfall of the Hurricane, the projected affected area is so large that portions of Eastern Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia will be hit with heavy snowfall. NOAA is forecasting snow for resorts that include: Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Timberline Four Seasons Resort, Canaan Valley Resort and Winterplace Ski Resort in West Virginia; Mad River Mountain and Snow Trails in Ohio; and Seven Springs and Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort in Pennsylvania.
