Wild Mountain, located near the Twin Cities, and Hi Tempo Ski Shop, White Bear Lake, Minnesota, have come up with a unique new learn-to-ski program called Discover Skiing. It's unique in that it brings together the teaching expertise of a local area's ski instructors and the equipment and clothing expertise of a ski shop to provide students a much broader understanding of the sport and all its elements.
"It improves their first day experience on the snow," said Wild VP Amy Frischmon. "The new skiers that go through this program find they are better equipped to learn and success and retention rates have been much higher than more traditional programs."
The first part of the Discover Skiing Program is a 45-minute class taught at Hi Tempo Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. They are free, but pre-registration is required by calling (651) 429-3333. The class covers ski equipment and clothing, how to properly use rental equipment, and how to start skiing or riding on a budget.
Students are eligible to purchase a special Discover Skiing pass that includes a lift ticket, rental package, and a lesson for $10 per person or $25 for the entire family, upon completion of the dryland class.
When participants complete the Discover Skiing on-snow class, they receive a complementary gift bag that includes a special discount offer for Wild's next level of ski lessons. Called "Get Hooked on Skiing," the package includes three lessons with rentals and lifts included and normally sells for $99. The Discover Skiing graduate can purchase the package for $50 - an incredible value. It's one of the best snowsports teaching programs I've found in the Heartland.
