Sierra Nevada opened for the winter season Nov. 15, for the first time on record. This early opening was a result of heavy snowfall the week before.
Skiers and snowboarders flocked to freshly laid pistes. The resort saw an excellent turnout for its first week; more than 7000 hit the slopes between Saturday Nov. 15 and Saturday Nov. 22. The snowfall didn't let up either; the first open weekend saw 50cm of fresh powder.
Sierra Nevada was scheduled to open Nov. 22, but the resort took advantage of heavy snowfalls and opened a week early. It is the first time Sierra Nevada has opened early in 20 years. The more northerly Spanish resort of Baqueria Beret opened its doors a week later Nov. 22.
The Sierra Nevada is Europe's southernmost ski resort. Set more than 3000 metres above sea level, it is bathed in Andalusian sun. Skiers and snowboarders will find 91 kilometres of skiable terrain suitable for all levels, with nine black runs, 42 red runs, 36 blue, and 16 green. The runs are connected by 27 lifts, including two gondolas, and 14 chairlifts. The resort is popular for its cross-country skiing, snow park with halfpipe, dogsled rides, and night skiing.
