The Hintertux Glacier is open 365 days a year - Austria's only summer ski region - and offers a multitude of activities: summer skiing, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, caving, canyoning, and rafting to name a few.
Summer skiing on the glacier offers 18 kilometres of pistes (nine lift systems) and the Betterpark with halfpipe, funboxes, table-tops, and rails. At the beginning of September fresh snow starts falling and 40-60 kilometres of pistes open for all levels of skier. Ski passes valid for May 8 to Oct. 7 cost €35,50 adults, €17 children for one day.
Explore the glacier with an hour's guided walking tour. Learn about the glacier's physical characteristics, glaciology (glacial formation and growth), and the effects and expansion of ice. Guided glacier walks take place three times a week in summer and autumn (Monday, Wednesay, and Friday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.). The highest dual cable car in the world, the Gletscherbus 3, takes visitors up to 3250 metres altitude. Even in summer it can be extrememly cold so it's recommended you take a warm jacket, hat, sunglasses, and good walking shoes.
Take a three-hour caving expedition through the Spannagelhohle caves or scale the summit of the Olperer Mountain with an experience guide. Depending on your fitness level, ice climbing is also available and gives daring climbers the opportunity to abseil down into the glacier crevices.
