Virginia's Ski Mettle Tested

Wintergreen had only five of its 25 slopes open this week, Massanutten Resort had only four of its 14 trails. The Homestead in Bath County reported only one of its nine trails open. Mountain operators said they haven't seen such a dismal start to their season in more than 30 years. "It's been a slower start then normal," said Bob Ashton, president of Wintergreen Resort. "We're clearly behind last year. It's not a disaster, but it's not what we want."
