Sunshine Village in Banff National Park is usually a quiet place in summer with hikers walking through alpine wildflower meadows. But not this summer. Two projects at Sunshine have things hopping.
The resort is replacing the Strawberry lift with a new high-speed quad purchased from the Vancouver Olympic Committee. The Doppelmayr lift installed for the duration of the 2010 Olympic Games in British Columbia gets its second life servicing skiers in Alberta.
A helicopter flew the new lift towers into place Aug. 19. "The lift will definitely be open and ready to roll for our Nov. 11 opening," spokesperson Doug Firby assured OnTheSnow.com.
The Creekside Restaurant and Bar at the base of the resort is getting more than a facelift. The rebuild attacked the interior and exterior of the building. The new exterior converts the building into the look of a rock and timber lodge. The interior renovation added 35 seats to the restaurant, increased retail space, and modernized the washrooms.
Season passes for Sunshine are on sale through Sept. 30. Adult passes cost $769 CAN while child and student passes run $249-599. Purchase season passes online or at two locations-the Calgary office or Banff Ski Hub in downtown Banff.
Lodging is available at Sunshine Mountain Lodge at the resort or in the Banff Townsite. Lodging reservations can be made through the Banff Ski Hub.
