Tyrol Basin, located amidst a maze of steep hills and valleys in the southwest corner of the Badger State, turned 50 last season. This area of Wisconsin was never touched by the succession of glaciers that flattened much of the upper Midwest. The natural topography provides some steep pitches that offer lots of freestyle terrain and big air opportunities.
The ski hill may not be big - 300 foot vertical - but the runs are fun and interesting with lots of terrain features built into the slopes. "We've developed a niche in the freestyle and racing market that sets us apart from other areas," says active owner Don McKay. "We support some of the best racing and freestyle programs in the Midwest."
It's also a great place for families and area residents to get out and enjoy some time on the slopes at an affordable price. The Basin offers a variety of midweek lift ticket specials; some of the best I've seen in the Heartland this season.
Weekdays, except for Tuesdays, lift tickets are $12 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Lift tickets are $12 and so are rentals and beginner lessons Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. You receive a free ski or snowboard rental every night 4 to 9 p.m., except for Tuesday, when you purchase a regular priced lift ticket.
Friday Night Lights take place every Friday through March 5. Lift tickets are $12 from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Wednesday night is for first-timers when a beginner area lift ticket, rentals, and a lesson are $12. Lessons are given 6 to 8 p.m.
