An abundance of snow in the mid-Atlantic this year may dictate that this is the perfect time to try a slightly different mode of accommodations: cabins and cottages. Canaan Valley in West Virginia has plenty of both.

The resort always gets its fair share of snow and, so far, this year exceeds expectations, with a swash of new snow from the latest storm to march through.

The 23 cabins and cottages at Canaan Valley Resort are equipped with fireplaces, linens, and full kitchens. It's a little like roughing it with modern conveniences. The two-bedroom cabins sleep four people easily. The best value is a midweek visit at $114 per night. Three bedrooms accommodate six and a four-bedroom unit sleeps eight.

Canaan Valley is another rare mid-Atlantic resort offering alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Later in February neighboring Timberline Resort hosts musical entertainment events that are indigenous to the region. A Celtic music weekend is set for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28. Saturday evening entertainment runs 4 to 8 p.m.

Canaan Valley and Timberline have benefitted from storms passing through the area, which ranged from light dustings to heavy dumps of snow. The region easily can get 150 inches of snow in a winter.
