Sundown Mountain, Iowa's largest ski area and one of the biggest in the lower Midwest, offers attractive mid-week specials throughout the season.
A 90-minute lesson is included anytime a beginner rents ski or snowboard equipment weekdays after 4 p.m. The package is $30. Night rates for lift and rental begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, instead of 4 p.m.
Monday through Wednesday lift tickets are $20 for ages 6-11, and $24 for 12 and up. Buy one lift ticket Thursdays and receive one free. Lift tickets are $24 and lift and rental is $38 Friday nights, from 4 p.m.
Sundown, with a vertical drop of 475 feet, offers big time skiing and riding for lower Midwest snowsports enthusiasts. Only a handful of Heartland ski areas have greater vertical drops. Located along an escarpment above Dubuque, you can see three states - Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin - from the top of the ski area. The runs, carved through a century-old cedar forest, deliver a scenic, somewhat Western-like experience.
Two day lodges sit atop the escarpment, which overlooks an ancient river valley that once flowed into the nearby Mississippi River. The ski area features a variety of slopes and trails, and one of the best terrain parks and halfpipes in the region featuring a monster wall and numerous rails.
