U.S. Ski Team Athletes Descend Upon Winter Park

Action is heating up in Winter Park as the NASTAR National Championships are in full swing. Nearly 1,200 recreational racers have gathered to compete in the nation’s top recreational ski and snowboard racing program.

Recreational athletes compete on the same race course as top current and former U.S. athletes such as Ted Ligety, Mikaela Shiffrin, Picabo Street, Doug Lewis, Heidi Voelker and A.J. Kitt.

Ted Ligety is at the races, providing inspiration to the young athletes, as he started skiing NASTAR at around age 7. The NASTAR Championships are designed to rally American alpine racers and the industry around one event.

The fun doesn’t stop at Winter Park, with the Return of the Champions Family Challenge and U.S. Ski Team Reunion. Kids and parents race together against other families. Kids of U.S. Ski Team members may be on course as well so be prepared. Space is limited so register in advance through Winter Park’s website.

U.S. Ski Team athletes stick around for the U.S. Ski Team Pro-Am. Race league teams pick a top U.S. Ski Team athlete and the fun continues. Rumor has it that Billy Kidd will zip on over from Steamboat to join in the fun.

Steamboat’s Director of Skiing Billy Kidd may show up for the festivities at Winter Park.

The U.S. Alpine Championships wrap up a long five months for top alpine athletes from over 400 U.S. Ski team club programs. Lindsey Vonn of Vail is expected to be there along with Julie Mancuso and Ted Ligety.

Note that Winter Park has different hours for April 9-22. On weekdays, hours are 10 a.m to 5 p.m, and on weekends, the mountain opens at 9:30 a.m and closes at 5 p.m.
