Unless the bus schedule has changed for 09/10, then riding the bus from downtown SLC to the resorts is a BAD idea. Last year the bus schedules were horribly inconvient from downtown. Most trips required you to change buses (or to a train) enroute and/or required you to leave the resorts 1 hour before the lifts closed to catch the last bus downtown. Some connections only gave you a few minutes to switch busses - if your buss was running late, you could be stuck. Even if your connections went smoothly, you were looking at a very long commute to the slopes.

Last year we threw in the towel and rented a car.

I should mention that 2 years ago the UTA "ski bus" schedule was far, FAR more convienent from downtown - offering direct (no connections) busses to Alta and Snowbird with reasonable pick-up/drop-off times. Hopefully that schedule will be offered.

Adding to what Likeabat said, the bus schedule was terrible last year from the the midvale locations. I stay at the end of the bus lines there every year because of the inexpensive hotel rates, and you never have to worry about getting a seat if you are on at the 1st stop, but last season the bus schedule was so limited that you had to pick up the bus before 6am and you didn't get dropped off at the end of the day until after 6pm. There used to be about 6 buses picking people up until about 9 or 10 am and then the return trips would begin at about 2-3, but now there are only 1 or 2 max buses for each resort. This year, I'm driving from Southern California so I'll save on airfare & car rental. The drive is pretty too (I did it 2 years ago).
