I have been to Zakopane five times, its a beautiful place and the centre is like a picture book especially if its snows.
However the down side is that its very disorganised and crowded. You find the pass you purchased at one ski lift is not valid at another lift area. The slopes are good and well kept but not greatly challenging.
Their is a new cable car completed in 2007 serving Kasprowy Wierch, but the queues for the cable car can be heredous, although their is a ski lift that serves skiers (I have never used it).
Getting to Zakopane can be a pain as their is no direct public transport to the town from Krakow airport. The train takes forever I am told, buses run frequently and take two and half hours (half the time of the train). I have always hired a car. In Zakopane buses are plentiful although which one to take and from where can be confusing. They seem to stop quite early too, (most early evening)
Zakopane used to be really cheap, skiing still is, but accommodation and restaurant prices have creped up a lot since I first visited four years ago
