I'm an advanced skier that just got back in the game. Last Winter was all about getting back into the sport. This Winter is all about gaining skills. I've been to the major Colorado resorts and I'm going to Heavenly also this year. I've never really skied a lot of powder or really anything off-piste. I can remember maybe two or three days ever that I have had powder up to my waist. I would really like to get into backcountry skiing either this Winter or the next but I don't really know how to go about it. Do I need to be a tele-marker first? Do I need training (avalanche, first-aid)? I could use any suggestions you may have. Also, I unfortunately live on the East coast, is there anywhere that you can do backcountry in the Northeast?
Check out my blog on this site called backcountry skiing essentials.

Get the gear first and start playing with it! Knowledge and experience will get you there! Take an avalanche course!
You don't have to learn to tele.
Please feel free to ask more questions.
