Once upon a time, I went with some friends to Heavenly, and was drafted into making a run down to the Safeway's. I used the borrowed Jeep Cherokee in AWD mode and it got the job done, including creeping up the steep driveway back at the cabin, that a car had trouble with. But I'm a car guy, and the Jeep isn't a vehicle I'd have myself. Not a fan of trucks unless they're sufficiently low (not slammed) and have a short bed. The less a truck is like a truck and more like a RWD car, the more I like it.

That being said, what's the best car for getting across snowy roads? Off the top of my head, I'd think a Subaru Impreza or Mistubishi Lancer Evo for their accomplished rally histories, but I put this before anyone with more practical experience.

I have 2002 Subaru Impreza, 190K. The car is solid; I got no major mechanical issues. AWD all the time, but still good on gas. I suggest to get a set of snow tires anyways, because on ice AWD is not the solution. I have the hatchback Impreza, so cargo area is pretty good, however, with roof rack c/w ski carrier or cargo box you'll be set.

I have a 2006 Subaru Impreza wagon and I love it. Drives well and handles nicely in the snow. I haven't taken on anything too snowy or unplowed, but the subaru AWD is one of the best. I also love my car because I get around 27-28 mpg! The trunk on the impreza is small, so I might suggest an Outback for more room and for higher ground clearance - I've heard the ground clearance on the Outback is the same as on a Ford Explorer! Good luck in the car hunt!

The best car hands down is the Range Rover Sport (that is if you can afford it)

If you are looking for some other cars that are still great but much cheaper then check out the link I posted below.

Take a look at this article it has some great snow cars:
